HONOLULU – A pair of Washington State home runs by Collin Montez curbed the University of Hawaii baseball team's three game winning streak 6-2 at Les Murakami Stadium on Thursday night.
The Rainbow Warriors (5-2) tried to fight back in the third inning with a two-run frame, but couldn't find any other offense against the Cougars (2-3).
Hawaii received 4.0 spectacular relief innings from freshman left-hander
Tai Atkins to try and keep the game close but the offense never came around. The freshman struck out two in each of his first two innings of work and ended with seven punch outs with three hits and one walk.
Montez hit a two-run home run in the first inning and put the Cougars up 6-0 in the third on a three-run home run. Both home runs came off of Hawaii's starter, senior
Logan Pouelsen (0-1), who lasted 4.0 innings, gave up six runs and struck out four.
A bunt single from sophomore right fielder
Scotty Scott loaded the bases but an error by the Cougars' second baseman allowed junior center fielder
Matt Wong to score and sophomore left fielder
Tyler Best to move to third. Scott was out via a rundown on the play.
A single to left from junior shortstop
Kole Kaler plated Best.
Redshirt junior
Carter Loewen came in and pitched the ninth inning striking out a pair.
The Cougars' starter, Zane Mills (2-0), tossed 7.0 innings and struck out seven, gave up five hits, two runs and had four wild pitches.
Sophomore
Aaron Davenport will toe the rubber for the Bows on Friday night at 6:35 p.m. against the Cougars.
