Men's Tennis Sweeps Washington, 5-0

HONOLULU--In its first ever televised match, the University of Hawai'i men's tennis team did not disappoint by recording a sweep over Washington, 5-0. It marked UH's first win over a Pac-12 opponent since 2006. For the Rainbow Warriors, it marked their third straight win, and their fifth win in their last six matches. On the No. 1 singles court, sophomore Andre Ilagan knocked of 43rd-ranked Jack Davis in three sets.

Hawai'i opened by capturing the doubles point for the early, 1-0 lead. The Huskies won first on the No. 3 court with Ewen Lumsden and Brandon Wong defeating UH's Simao Telo Alves and Chia-Hua Lu, 6-3. Hawai'i's No. 2 duo of Blaz Seric and Axel Labrunie then evened things up by defeating Jack Pulliam and Adam Torocsik by a break, 6-4. Soon after, Lucas Labrunie and Ilagan secured the doubles point with a 6-4 win over Alexis Alvarez and Jack Davis.

Hawai'i kept their foot on the gas and took the momentum into singles with four of the six winning the first set. Axel Labrunie started things off with a 7-5, 6-2 straight set win over Wong on the No. 4 court. UH's No. 3 Blaz Seric then swept Thibault Cancel, 6-4, 6-3 to give the Rainbow Warriors a 3-0 lead. Ilagan then clinched the match in a see-saw battle against Davis on the No. 1 court. Ilagan took the first set, but Davis fought back to tie the match at a set a piece. But Ilagan opened the third set by posting a 5-0 led and after Davis held his serve, Ilagan completed the victory winning, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1. It marked the first win over a ranked opponent for Ilagan in his career.

On the No. 6 court, Tristan Martins defeated Liam Puttergill 7-5, 6-2 before a rain delay ended up halting play on the last two courts. Lucas Labrunie fell in the first set and was tied at 6-6 and up 4-3 in the second set tiebreaker, while Alves was down 7-6(4), 5-3 on Court No. 5.

Hawai'i will head out on the road for a couple of weeks to compete in the Mountain Pacific Invitational in Fresno, Calif. from Feb. 29-Mar. 1. They will then take on Pacific in Stockton, Calif. on Mar. 4 and conclude their road trip after competing in the Sacramento State Invitational from Mar. 6-7.
