LAS VEGAS, Nev.--The University of Hawai'i men's tennis team (2-4) fought hard, but just came up short in its final match of the Las Vegas Invitational to host team, UNLV 4-1. on Saturday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
The Rebels took the doubles point for the early 1-0 lead winning on Courts 1 and 2. UNLV's Jordan Sauer and Alex Kobelt knocked off UH's
Andre Ilagan and
Lucas Labrunie on the No. 1 court, 6-3, then Clayton Alenik and Eric Samuelsson held off UH's No. 2 duo of
Blaz Seric and
Axel Labrunie, 6-4.
In singles, the Rainbow Warriors battled and made a charge, but were unable complete the comeback. UH's No. 3 Seric tied the match at 1-1 after defeating Sauer, in a quick, straight-set match, 6-3. 6-2. UNLV then regained the lead notching wins on Courts 2 and five as
Lucas Labrunie fell at No. 2 to Samuelsson, 6-3, 6-2 while Simao Telo Alves dropped his match, 6-3, 6-3 to UNLV's Alenik. The last three matches however all went into the third set. The Rebels clinched the match as Kobelt defeated UH's Ilagan, 4-6, 7-6(4), 6-2. Both
Axel Labrunie and
Tristan Martins were winning in the third set when the match was clinched.
Hawai'i will return to play two matches against St. Mary's (CA) at the UH Tennis Complex. UH will take on the Gaels at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 5 and again at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 6.
