Game Story Lines
Â
• The 'Bows are coming off an 82-74 loss to NCAA Division II opponent Hawai'i Pacific from a week ago (Dec. 13). It marked the first-ever loss to the Sharks dating back to 1982, bringing the all-time record against the fellow O'ahu native university to 11-1.
Â
• In the loss to the Sharks, UH dominated many categories, including rebounds +14, free-throw shooting +15 in attempts and + 12 in makes, and overall field goal percentage at 45% compared to 40%. But what swayed the game to visiting HPU was the turnover battle and three-point shooting. UH recorded 20 turnovers, resulting in 15 points off turnovers for the Sharks, and HPU hit a combined 15 three-pointers. The 'Bows, a program known for the long-distance shot, struck just five.
Â
• The season opener saw the debut of six new student-athletes for UH, including two new starters. Freshman guard
Daejah Phillips led the team in minutes played with 33, adding 11 points and five rebounds. Junior center
Alicja Falkowska played eight minutes, pulled down two rebounds, and recorded one blocked shot.
Â
• Senior forward
Amy Atwell, the longest-tenured player on the roster at five years with the program, returned to form as she led the 'Bows in both points and rebounds against the Sharks. Atwell hit three-of-eight from long range, plus a perfect six-for-six from the charity stripe, paving her way to 21 points and nine rebounds.
Â
• The 'Bows and Vulcans met up two years ago in a lopsided exhibition win for UH at 62-26. UH currently has two players from the 2018-19 roster still occupying a roster spot in 2020-2021. Atwell, who did not play in the game, and senior guard
Jadynn Alexander started the game, finishing with four points and four rebounds in 14 minutes of play. On the other side of the floor, UH-Hilo has three players returning from the game, Mandi Kawaha, Sara Shimizu, and Milia Lee.
