HONOLULU--The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team opened its 2020 season with the Weinman Foundation Invitational tournament. The start time for the day was delayed by six hours due to inclement weather. But, once the sun came out, the players were able to finish their doubles matches and about two-thirds of the singles matches at the UH Tennis Complex on Thursday afternoon before the rains washed away the opportunity to finish seven matches. Five teams are competing in the tournament--Hawai'i, BYU, Louisville, Northern Arizona, and Washington State.

The day started with doubles. UH was able to win one of three doubles matches. The Hawai'i duo of Petra Melounova and Nikola Dolakova held off Washington State's Melissa Ates and Hikaru Sato by a break for the win, 7-5. Hawai'i newcomers Bojana Markovic and Lea Romain were edged out in a tiebreaker by Northern Arizona's Adrianna Sosnowska and Mimi Bland, 7-6 (3).

In singles, the 'Bows performed well, winning three matches out of their four completed matches. Senior Michelle Pits cruised past BYU's Madeline Almeida, 6-1, 6-1 and fellow senior Nikola Dolakova defeated Louisville's Raven Neely, 6-2, 6-4. UH rookie Madison Kim held BYU's Helen Jiao at bay, 6-1, 6-3. UH's Lea Romain and Rebecca Ehn both made their collegiate debuts as well, but their matches went unfinished.

On Friday at 10:00 a.m., they will complete the unfinished matches before beginning the draw for Day 2 of the Weinman Foundation Invitational (weather permitting).
