HONOLULU – On a night filled with fun and games, the University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team out-lasted its alumni, 25-21, 18-25, 33-31, Friday night at the Stan Sheriff Center.
The top-ranked Rainbow Warriors did not play any of their regular players and the old guys took advantage behind the delight of the estimated crowd of 1,200. The alumni nearly took the match, squandering two match points before assistant coach and former All-American
Josh Walker hit wide to end the match.
Walker finished with a match-high 17 kills while former All-American middle blocker Maulia La Barre added 10 kills, two blocks, and two aces for the alumni. Mike China added six kills, all in Set 3.
For the varsity, opposite
Cole Hogland had a team-high 12 kills and two blocks. Outside hitter
Devon Johnson added nine kills and three blocks while middle blocker
Danny Wong had a match-high six blocks.
Alaka'i Todd served up three aces.
Before the match, the teams engaged in a skills challenge. In the serving competition, Alex Bergonio and Justin Ching of the alumni defeated UH's
Gage Worsley and
'Eleu Choy, 9-6.
La Barre won the setting competition defeating Todd, 27-17 while UH's
Garrett Geiger captured the hitting competition, nailing three targets.
