Fourth Quarter Comeback Not Enough For Hawai‘i at Long Beach State

Long Beach, Calif.— The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team battled to a 62-55 loss on the road against Long Beach State Thursday evening at Walter Pyramid.

The Rainbow Wahine (8-10, 2-3) have yet to win a Big West Conference road game and have lost four straight away from the island of O'ahu dating back to their last win at Washington on Dec. 8, 2019. The Beach (8-10, 3-2) won their second consecutive conference matchup and will look to make it three in a row with a visit to UC Irvine Saturday.

The first half didn't go well for the 'Bows as only two players registered field goals in the opening 20 minutes. Overall the iron wasn't kind as UH shot 4-of-17 from the field for 23.5 percent, leading to a 35-15 deficit at halftime.

UH put it all together in the second half, turning up the defensive pressure working back into the game against the Beach. The adjustments led to the Bow' pulling to within six late in the fourth quarter, but time eventually ran out on the UH comeback.

Senior guard Julissa Tago, the reigning Big West Player of the Week, was a bright spot offensively for the 'Bows finishing with 22 points. She has now scored double-digit points in five straight games, and three of those five have 20-point performances. Tago also added three rebounds and three assists to her stat line.

Fellow senior guard Savannah Reier played valuable minutes off the bench as she tallied a new-career-high with 15 points, hitting 2-of-4 from the three-point territory and a near-perfect 7-of-8 from the free-throw line.

A notable difference for UH against the Beach compared to the wins over UC Riverside and the Cal State Fullerton was the turnovers. Combined in the two games a week ago, UH had 13 turnovers, in the first half at LBSU the 'Bows turned over the ball 15 times and 22 throughout the evening. UH won the rebounding war by a small margin at 35 to 33, and it marks the first time this season UH outrebounded its opponent and lost.

The road trip continues for the 'Bows as they roll into UC Riverside for a matchup on Saturday. UH already holds an 80-57 win over the Highlanders from last week, where Tago scored 21 points in the lopsided victory.
