Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Rainbow Wahine Sweep Highlanders in Wire-To-Wire Victory

Riverside, Calif.— It was bounce back Saturday for the University of Hawai'i women's basketball team, winning a wire-to-wire contest on the road at UC Riverside, 65-59.

The Rainbow Wahine (9-10, 3-3) picked up their first Big West Conference road victory and notched a season sweep over UCR. It marks the first time the 'Bows have swept the Highlanders (6-13, 2-3) since the 2015 season.

UH set the tone in the first half with the spark coming from the bench. The Bows' outscored the Highlanders 14-0 in the first 20 minutes as senior guard Savannah Reier contributed with all eight of her points, hitting a perfect 3-fo-3 from the floor and 2-for-2 from the free-throw line. Adding as well from the bench was junior forward Amy Atwell.

With under six minutes left to go in the second quarter, the UH lead was cut to two at 20-18. Following a jumper from freshman guard Nae Nae Calhoun, Atwell followed up the next two positions with back-to-back three-point buckets, extending the lead to double-digits. The momentum stayed in the green and white's favor for a 35-23 lead at the half.

UCR found its offensive attack in the third quarter and mounted a comeback to pull within one at 43-42. But senior guard Julissa Tago flipped it back to the 'Bows as she scored eight consecutive points over the final two minutes of the quarter, making it 51-44 heading into the final frame.

The Highlanders continued to battle, but UH hit both shots from the floor, and the free-throw line, rising to the occasion for the win in the final 10 minutes to seal the victory.

Tago notched double-digit scoring for the sixth straight game as she led the team with 15 points. She went 3-for-8 from three-point land, while dishing out a team-high five assists and pulled down four rebounds.

After a rough go Thursday night at Long Beach State, Calhoun was back to her old ways scoring 10 points and swiping three steals.

As a team, UH cut down on the turnovers, limiting themselves to 10 miscues. Most notably, it was the 'Bows' effort from the three throw line that led to their win, hitting 14-of-15 from the line.

The 'Bows will head home after the two-game road trip to prepare for UC Irvine and LBSU on Jan. 30 and Feb. 1. It'll be the first matchup with the Anteaters this season, while UH will have a chance to even the series after dropping its road contest against the Beach from Jan. 23. Both games will be broadcast live on Spectrum Sports.
