BRISTOL, Tenn. – The Univesity of Hawai'i men's volleyball team capped off a four-game road trip with its ninth-straight win of the season. The Rainbow Warriors topped King in straight sets, 25-19, 25-19, 25-15 and were led by redshirt senior
Colton Cowell's match-high 10 kills.
Freshmen
Chaz Galloway and
Brett Sheward started for the second consecutive game and paced the Warriors in the first two sets. Galloway finished tied for second on the team in kills with seven and hit at a blistering .545 clip. Sheward dished out 24 assists in the two sets he started and played in while also adding three digs and two blocks.
Senior
Rado Parapunov also finished with seven kills in the first two sets before ushering in freshman
Dimitrios Mouchlias who finished with a team-high four aces and two kills.
All 15 travelling players played and recorded significant numbers in the win. As a team, the 'Bows put up 12.5 total blocks in the three sets and hit .358 as a team. Hawai'i served up a season-high 10 aces and limited King to .152 attacking on the night.
Hawai'i started the match with a double block from freshman
Guilherme Voss and Parapunov. A Cowell kill and a King attacking error put the Bows up 3-0 to start the night. The set remained back-and-forth for much of the first two thirds of the set before Hawai'i's block and attacking presence was too much. The 'Bows finished the set on a
King started the second set with the lead, but kills from Cowell and Galloway pushed the 'Bows' lead to 3-1. The set mimicked the first in a tug-of-war set where neither team pulled away until Cowell rattled off a couple of aces to take back the lead from King. A service error from the home team ended the second set the same way the first set ended.
Hawai'i sent out five new starters in the third set with just junior Gage Worsely and Cowell on the court to start the set. Sophomore
Max Rosenfeld and freshman Alakai Todd got the nod at middle with redshirt sophomore
Jackson Van Eekeren setting the squad. Mouchlias and sophomore
Filip Humler also started.
The third set started opposite of the first two with Hawai'i jumping out to a 3-0 lead and then using a pair of blocks to push the lead to 9-4. Two Mouchlias aces and kills from Rosenfeld and Humler padded the lead as Hawai'i cruised to a 25-15 win.
The 'Bows return to the Stan Sheriff Center Friday, Jan. 14 for the Alumni match before hosting the Outrigger Hotels & Resorts Invitational Feb. 6-8.
