Honolulu, O'ahu – The University of Hawai'i women's cross country team opens the 2019 season playing host to the 19th annual Big Wave Invitational at the Kahuku Golf Course on Saturday, August 31, with the start time slated at 7:45 a.m. HT.
Competing in this year's field includes No. 6 BYU, George Fox, HPU, UH Hilo, Chaminade and Pacific (Calif.).
Entering his sixth season, head coach
Tim Boyce's 2019 squad features four returning letterwinners from a season ago, including
Tristan Setzer,
Sienna Santiago,
Olivia Hill and
Jeanalyn Wadsack-Myers. Hawai'i brings back a letterwinner from two seasons ago with the addition of junior
Lisa Tashiro. Boyce also welcomes in a bevy of 10 newcomers to the program comprising of eight freshman and two transfers.
Last season at the Big Wave Invite, the Rainbow Wahine used a balanced attack with three of the scoring five finishing in the top 10 to claim its first BWI title since the 2010 season. UH was paced by Santiago, who finished third overall and came across the line with a time of 19:38 to lead UH.
On the season, the Rainbow Wahine will compete in seven regular season meets, which includes two additional races on O'ahu (Chaminade Invitational, HPU Invitational) and the rest in the Golden State of California.
All time, the Rainbow Wahine have captured a total of five Big Wave Invitational championships (2001, 2004, 2006, 2010, 2019).
