HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i track and field program has added
Madeleine Outman Carleton as associate coach, head coach
Tim Boyce announced. Carleton will coach the sprints, jumps, and hurdles athletes.
"We're excited to welcome Coach Carleton to the University of Hawai'i," Boyce said. "She brings a great deal of experience to our program from all levels of NCAA Track and Field, and comes highly recommended for her commitment to the athletic and academic success of student-athletes."
Carleton most recently served as the head coach of the women's track and field team at Cleveland State for three seasons from 2016-19. Under her guidance, the Vikings recorded a program-best, 40 total points at the 2019 Horizon League Outdoor Championships. During her stint at CSU, she coached over 15 student-athletes to Horizon League podium finishes, including seven this past season.
During the 2014-15 season, Carleton was named the head track and field coach at Ursuline College after serving the previous two seasons as an assistant coach for the cross country and track and field programs. Carleton helped guide the Arrows from an unstructured NAIA program to a top-40 team nationally, coaching the school's first two NCAA All-American athletes (800-meters & 100-meter hurdles).
In 2014, Carleton led Ursuline to the GMAC Outdoor Championship title, the first-ever conference championship in school history in any sport. She also led the team to the inaugural conference's indoor championship in 2015, earning GMAC Coach of the Year accolades.
Prior to Ursuline, Carleton was an assistant track and field coach and recruiting coordinator at Emory University from 2010-12. She was a three-time NCAA South/Southeast Region Assistant Coach of the Year, as selected by the nation's head track and field coaches. She earned the honor for the 2011 and 2012 outdoor seasons as well as the 2012 indoor season.
Carleton got her start in coaching as a volunteer coach at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) from 2008-10.
While competing collegiately, Carleton was a 13-time NCAA All-American and a four-time Academic All-American. She was the Division II Atlantic Region Field Athlete of the Year in 2009 and '10 and holds 10 school records at IUP and six more at Williams. She was the IUP and PSAC winner of the NCAA Woman of the Year award in 2009.
Carleton graduated with a degree in psychology and American studies from Williams College in 2008 and earned her master's in sociology from IUP in 2010.
