’Bows Fall to Cal Poly, 3-2

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - The University of Hawaiʻi baseball team fell by a 3-2 final score to first-place Cal Poly on Saturday at Baggett Stadium in Big West action.

Hawaiʻi (19-24, 7-10 Big West) outhit Cal Poly (22-21, 12-2 Big West) by a 10-7 margin, but timely hitting for the Mustangs produced runs in the second, third and fifth innings for the win.

Trialing 1-0 in the third, the Rainbow Warriors tallied both of their runs to take a 2-1 edge. After back-to-back singles from Tyler Best and Maaki Yamazaki, Ethan Lopez hit a double down the line in left field to drive in both runs.

The Mustangs quickly leveled the scoring at 2-2 in the bottom of the third before taking the lead for good at 3-2 in the fifth with another run.

In the ninth, UH put the tying run on second and the go-ahead run on first but was unable to tie the game.

Hitting second in the lineup for the first time this season, Best went 3-for-5 with a double, while Yamazaki and Tyler Murray racked up two hits apiece.

On the hill, freshman starter Aaron Davenport went 6.0 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) with seven hits and three strikeouts. Out of the pen, Colin Ashworth tossed the final 2.0 innings without giving up a run or a hit.

The series finale between UH and Cal Poly is set for Sunday, May 5 at 1:00 p.m. PT (10:00 a.m. HT).
