Baseball Drops Saturday's Game to Nationally-Ranked UCSB

HONOLULU - The University of Hawaiʻi baseball team suffered an 11-1 setback to Big West leader UC Santa Barbara on Saturday night at Les Murakami Stadium.

In a game with a season-high attendance of 4,296, the Rainbow Warriors (20-26, 8-12 Big West) fell behind UCSB (43-7, 17-3 Big West) as the Gauchos posted four first-inning runs and never looked back.

UCSB, ranked in all the national polls - as high as number six by Collegiate Baseball, tacked on one run in the second and three in the fourth for an 8-0 lead.

The 'Bows broke through to score in the fifth inning when Ethan Lopez knocked his fifth home run of the season. The solo shot, his 13th career home run, sailed over the wall in center field to put the score at 8-1.

Two more runs in the sixth put the Gauchos at double digits with a 10-1 edge before a single run in the ninth made it 11-1 in favor of the visitors.

Aaron Davenport started on the mound for UH, going 1.1 innings and allowing five on eight hits. Li'i Pontes went the next 2.2 innings, allowing three runs on three hits. Dominic DeMiero pitched the final 5.0 inning, striking out three while giving up three runs on seven hits.

UCSB starter Jack Dashwood pitched 7.0 strong innings, yielding one run on two hits to earn the win.

The Rainbow Warriors and Gauchos will close their three-game series on Sunday, May 19, with a 1:05 p.m. game at Les Murakami Stadium. UH will honor Colin Ashworth, Dominic DeMiero, Kash Koltermann, Ethan Lopez and Maaki Yamazaki with a Senior Day ceremony following the game.
