Melounova Earns Third Big West Player of the Year Award; Four Named All-Big West

IRVINE, Calif.—University of Hawai'i women's tennis standout Petra Melounova made history by earning her third-straight Big West Player of the Year award. Maayan Sela, Nikola Dolakova, and Alzbeta Houbova all earned all-Big West honors for the 2019 season.

Melounova became just the third individual in Big West history to be named Player of the Year three times, joining Pacific's Susanne Bertel (1999, 2000, '02) and Long Beach State's Hannah Grady (2006-09). The Rainbow Wahine has earned the league's Player of the Year in four of the last five seasons with Cindy Nguyen winning the award in 2015.

Melounova was also named to the all-Big West first team for the third-consecutive season in both singles and doubles. Currently she is ranked at No. 61 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) singles poll. Recently she was just announced to have captured the Big West's automatic bid to the NCAA Singles Championship as the conference's highest ranked singles player for the third consecutive season.

This season as a junior, Melounova posted a 13-2 dual match record all at No. 1 singles. She won her last seven singles contests and went 15-1 over her final 16 matches. Melounovva recorded upset wins over three nationally ranked opponents – No. 34 Salma Ewing (USC), No. 30 Julia Rosenqvist (California) and No. 86 Maddie Pothoff (Santa Clara), and she finished 10-0 against Big West opponents this season, including seven wins against players who also reside on the all-conference first team. She has won her last 17 encounters against a Big West opponent in singles.

Off the court, earlier this season Melounova, who is an electrical engineering major, was named the Big West's Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year for UH.

Sela, a senior transfer, earned all-Big West second team honors going 7-10 in dual matches primarily on the No. 2 court. She finished the season strong, winning three of her last four collegiate matches. In the Big West tournament's semifinal upset over top-seeded UC Santa Barbara, Sela clinched the 4-3 match with a dramatic three-set win to propel the 'Bows into the championship match.

In doubles, Melounova and partner Nikola Dolakova garnered all-Big West first team honors. It is Dolakova's second time being named to the all-Big West first team in doubles. UH's No. 1 duo posted a 5-4 dual match record and an 8-4 overall record together. Melounova and Dolakova won their last six straight matches—including all three in the recent Big West tournament.

Sela and Alzbeta Houbova posted a 7-2 record on the No. 3 court and went a perfect 3-0 in conference dual matches. They also won their last six decisions of the season. Last year, Houbova earned all-Big West honorable mention honors in doubles.
