Rainbow Sailors Qualify For Coed Nationals

LONG BEACH, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i coed sailing squad finished in third place at the PCCSC Coed Dinghy Championship hosted April 27-28 by USC. With a top-four finish, the Rainbows qualified for next month's ICSA Coed Dinghy National Championship in Newport, R.I.

A total of 13 teams competed in 22 races - 11 in each division - over the weekend. UH totaled 96 points over the weekend. Patrick Wilkinson and Danielle Ahir started off in the A division, they totaled 32 points in races 1-4. Mathew Butler and Annika Garrett took over and sailed races 5-8 tallying 12 points to keep the A division in the mix. The 'Bows B division team of Michael Pacholski and Devon Stapleton totaled 23 points through six races on Saturday.

The 'Bows went into Sunday in third place, five points in front of host Long Beach State.  Wilkinson and Garrett sailed three races and Pacholski and Stapleton sailed five races, ultimately maintaining their position and securing UH a post-season berth. A division finished with 57 points, and B division finished with 39 points.

Stanford captured the regatta with 43 points, their 10th consecutive sweep of the conference titles. UC Santa Barbara finished runner-up with 68 points. Long Beach State also qualified for the nationals by finishing fourth with 105 points.

The Rainbows will now compete in the ICSA Coed Dinghy Championship, May 28-31, in Newport, R.I. It will be UH's 18th overall appearance and sixth in the last seven years in the coed nationals.
