Men’s Golf Hosts Big West Championship For First Time

The University of Hawai'i men's golf team will host the Big West Conference Championship for the first time, Monday, April 29 and Tuesday, April 30 at the Wailua Golf Course in Līhu'e, Kaua'i.

The Rainbow Warriors will play host to a conference championship for the first time since 2009. That year, UH hosted the Western Athletic Conference Championship at the Rio Secco Golf Club in Las Vegas, Nev. The last time Hawai'i played host to a conference championship in the 50thstate was the 2002 WAC Championship at the Turtle Bay Resort's Fazio Course.

UH enters this year's championship as the No. 7 seed with a line-up that includes senior Cameron Kaneko, junior Nick Nelson, and sophomores Justin Arcano, Justin Ngan, and Matt Lloyd. Cal State Fullerton is the No. 1 seed followed by UC Davis, Long Beach State, UC Santa Barbara, UC Irvine, Cal Poly, UH, UC Riverside, and CSUN. UCI is the defending champion, capturing its eighth Big West title.

Participants will play a total of 54 holes, 36 on Monday and 18 on Tuesday at the par-72, 6,991-yard course. UH begins its tee times on hole 10 at 7:30 a.m. HT on Monday along with UCR and CSUN.

Wailua is a municipal course, which played host to three USGA National Public Links Championships and has a Top 10 rating by Golf Digest as one of the best courses in the state of Hawai'i. It has also been the home track of UH's John A. Burns Intercollegiate since 2014.

UH's best finish at the Big West Championship was sixth in 2013 and '14. Last year, the Warriors placed ninth while freshman Justin Arcano was UH's top finisher, tying for 23rdplace at 4-over 220. Kaneko, Ngan, and Nelson all competed at last year's championship.
