Rainbow Warriors Defeat San Diego, 5-2

SAN DIEGO - The University of Hawaiʻi baseball team started its eight-game road trip on a positive note with a 5-2 non-conference victory over San Diego at Fowler Field on Wednesday.

Hawaiʻi (17-20), which has now won three games in a row, used 10 different pitchers on the day to pick up the victory over the Toreros (25-17).

Li'i Pontes got the start, going 1.0 inning without allowing a run. The next seven pitchers went 1.0 innings apiece. In order, Scott Bellina, Cade Halemanu, Carter Loewen, Connor Butler, Aaron Davenport, Calvin Turchin and Jeremy Wu-Yelland got Hawaiʻi through the eighth. Colin Ashworth started the ninth before Dylan Thomas closed out the game with strikeout to earn the save.

At the plate, Maaki Yamazaki went 2-for-4 with two runs, while Ethan Lopez finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs, and Brennen Hancock added two hits on the day. Jack Kennelly knocked in two runs for the 'Bows.

UH's offense got things started with an RBI single off the bat of Lopez to score Yamazaki in the first inning.

After a USD run in the second, Hawaiʻi regained the lead in the third when Lopez's sac fly plated Yamazaki from third base. The lead stretched to 3-1 in the sixth when Kennelly knocked an RBI single to score Daylen Calicdan.

The Rainbow Warriors put up two more runs in the top of the ninth for a 5-1 advantage. Dallas Duarte touched home on a passed ball, and Alex Baeza came around to score on Kennelly's sacrifice fly to center.

San Diego's Adam Kerner knocked a solo home run in the bottom of the ninth to make it 5-2, but that was as close as the Toreros would get.

Hawaiʻi improves to 8-2 in the all-time series versus San Diego.

The win is number 498 in head coach Mike Trapasso's career.

UH will continue its road trip with a three-game series at Big West opponent CSUN scheduled for April 26-28.
