Baseball Drops Series Opener versus Cal State Fullerton, 5-2

HONOLULU - The University of Hawaiʻi baseball team fell by a 5-2 final score to defending Big West champion Cal State Fullerton on Thursday night at Les Murakami Stadium in game one of the three-game series.

The Rainbow Warriors (14-20, 4-6 Big West) showed fight until the end, putting up a ninth inning run, but it was not enough to come back versus the Titans (16-17, 4-3 Big West).

Cal State Fullerton jumped on the Rainbow Warriors early with a first-inning run for a 1-0 lead with another run in the third making it 2-0.

The 'Bows got on the board in the fourth when Ethan Lopez ripped a double to the fence in left center field and Alex Baeza followed with an RBI single to cut the deficit down to 2-1.

Two innings later, however, Cal State Fullerton began a run with single runs in three-consecutive innings to put some distance between the two sides.

In the ninth, Daylen Calicdan started with a single then took second on a balk. Pinch hitter Logan Pouelsen followed with an RBI single to make it 5-2. Two batters later, Cal State Fullerton closer Michael Weisberg got the final out to get the save.

Titans starting pitcher Tanner Bibee went 8.2 innings, allowing two runs on eight hits to pick up the win.

Eight different UH batters registered hits on the night with Pouelsen and Baeza recording RBIs.

On the mound for UH, Aaron Davenport started and went 2.0 innings, yielding two runs on two hits with three strikeouts. Kash Koltermann followed with 4.0 inning, giving up two runs on four hits. Colin Ashworth faced two batters before giving way to Jeremy Wu-Yelland, who struck out two in 1.0 innings of work.

UH's fifth and final picher of the night, Carter Loewen, went the last 2.0 innings, allowing one run on one hit.

Game two of the series versus Cal State Fullerton is Friday, April 19 at Les Murakami Stadium. First pitch is slated for 6:35 p.m.
