HONOLULU –
Logan Pouelsen delivered a walk-off three-run home run in the bottom of the ninth to lift the University of Hawaiʻi baseball team to an 8-6 win over Cal State Fullerton in Big West action at Les Murakami Stadium on Friday night.
Hawaiʻi (15-20, 5-6 Big West) trailed 6-4 heading to the bottom of the ninth before mounting the comeback.
The 'Bows chipped away at Cal State Fullerton's lead when
Scotty Scott scored on a wild pitch to put the score at 6-5 in the ninth. With
Ethan Lopez on second and
Maaki Yamazaki on third, Pouelsen crushed the fourth pitch of the at bat over the fence in right field for the win over the Titans (16-18, 4-4 Big West).
Trailing 2-0 in the third, UH got on the board with an
Alex Baeza RBI single. After another Cal State Fullerton run in the fourth, the 'Bows answered in the bottom of the frame with an RBI triple from Scott and an RBI single from Yamazaki to level the scoring at 3-3.
Ethan Lopez knocked a solo home run in the fifth to give the 'Bows their first lead of the night at 4-3.
The lead was short lived, however, with Cal State Fullerton scoring twice in the sixth and once in the eight before Pouelsen's ninth-inning heroics.
Jeremy Wu-Yelland earned the win after pitching the final 3.0 innings out of the bullpen, allowing one run (unearned) on two hits with three strikeouts.
Cade Smith was solid again in his third start of the season, going 6.0 innings and yielding five runs on seven hits.
UH outhit the Titans, 14-9, with Scott, Yamazaki,
Tyler Murray and
Tyler Best all picking up multi-hit games.
The series finale versus Cal State Fullerton is slated for Saturday, April 20 at 1:05 p.m. at Les Murakami Stadium.
