HONOLULU – The No. 6 University of Hawai'i women's beach volleyball team went undefeated on the opening day of the First Foundation Queen's Cup Saturday at Queen's Beach. The Rainbow Wahine out-lasted No. 14 LMU, 3-2, before blanking San Jose State, 5-0, and defeating Washington, 4-1.
 
Making its first home appearance in nearly a month, UH improved to 21-7 overall. The Rainbow Wahine have won nine of its last 10 matches.
 
The first match versus LMU- the only other ranked squad in the field - was a battle all the way through as the Lions took a 2-1 lead on the SandBows. But UH ultimately won the top three flights capped by Emily Maglio and Amy Ozee's 21-15, 22-24, 15-12 victory over Bo Culo and Megan Nash at the top of the order. That clinching point allowed the 'Bows to beat the Lions for the 10th time in 11 all-time meetings.
 
In the next match, the Rainbow Wahine breezed past San Jose State, 5-0, in just the second-ever meeting between the squads. UH won all five courts in straight sets, including a 21-11, 21-11 win by Maglio and Ozee over Caitlin Bettenay and Tabea Schwarz in a match that barely took 30 minutes.
 
The SandBows capped the day by rolling 4-1 over Washington. UH got three of its four wins by straight sets, including a 21-15, 21-10 straight set win by Morgan Martin and Pani Napoleon over Avie Niece and Cat McCoy on Court No. 3. It was the third sweep of the day for Martin and Napoleon, who extended their school record of consecutive sets won to 38. The pair is a perfect 19-0 this season.  
 
The First Foundation Queen's Cup continues tomorrow with the championship round. UH will face San Jose State in the second semifinal at 10:30 a.m., preceded by LMU and Washington at 9:00 a.m. The third-place match will be at 12:00 p.m., while the championship is set for 1:30 p.m.
