HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i men's tennis team split their matches on Friday to open the Golden State Invitational co-hosted by Sacramento State and UC Davis. Hawai'i edged out Sacramento State in their tourney opener, 4-3. But the 'Bows fell in their second match to Fresno State, 4-0 at the Sacramento State Tennis Courts.

The Rainbow Warriors battled all match and with the match tied at 3-3, Simao Telo Alves clinched the win on the No. 5 court.
Host Sacramento State captured the doubles point, winning on the No. 2 and 3 courts to start the match.
In singles,
Andre Ilagan dominated Dom Miller on the No. 1 court in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3. UH's No. 3,
Blaz Seric had a solid match, defeating Louis Chabut, 6-3, 6-2. Sac State's No. 4 Johannes Gjerkaker then evened the match at 2-2 with a straight-set win over UH's
Tristan Martins. The Hornets took a brief 3-2 lead with No. 2 Hermont Legaspi knocking off
Lucas Labrunie, 6-3, 6-1.
But Hawai'i's No. 5 Alves and No. 6
Asad Siyyid came through in the clutch to pull out the win for the Rainbow Warriors. Siyyid pulled away from Josh Snowdon-Poole, 6-2, 6-0 to knot the team score at 3-3. Alves came through winning to clinch the match at No. 5, defeating Donald Hall, 6-2, 6-7 (4), 6-3.

In Hawai'i's second match of the day, Fresno State shut out the Rainbow Warriors 4-0 in a rematch from earlier this season in which the Bulldogs also won 4-1 at the Pacific Mountain Invitational in Stockton, Calif.
Fresno State earned the doubles point to take the early 1-0 lead by winning on Courts 1 and 3. On the No. 2 court however, UH's duo of Seric and Alves nearly blanked Zdenek Derkas and Cem Erturk, 6-1.
The Bulldogs dispatched the 'Bows for the shutout in singles winning the first three matches to capture the win. Fresno State's Derkas knocked off Ilagan, 6-3, 6-1 on the No. 1 court. Cagatay Soke followed with a 6-1, 7-6 (3) win over Siyyid at No. 5. Fresno State then clinched with a 7-5, 6-4 win by Mantas Bugailiskis over UH's
Lucas Labrunie.
Hawai'i concludes the Golden State Invitational and their roadtrip on Sunday, March 9 in the third place match vs. UC Davis.
