Men’s Volleyball Opens Outrigger Invitational With Win Over King

HONOLULU – The second-ranked University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team opened the 25thOutrigger Resorts Invitational with a straight-set win over King University, Thursday at the Stan Sheriff Center. Set scores were 25-8, 25-15, 25-7.
 
The Rainbow Warriors (13-0) tied the best start in program history and extended their set win streak to 39 on the season, having won every match in straight sets. UH will next play 15th-ranked Ball State on Friday at 7:00 p.m., while King will face sixth-ranked Pepperdine in the 4:00 p.m. match. 
 
In the second-ever meeting between the programs, the Warriors needed only 69 minutes to dispatch the Tornado of Conference Carolinas. UH hit .540 for the match and tallied a season-high 13 aces. Middle blocker Dalton Solbrig led the way with a match-high eight kills, hitting 545. Outside hitter Colton Cowell had three aces along with five kills and three blocks. Joe Worsley, Stijn van Tilburg, and Filip Humler each added two aces
 
King (10-6) was led by Sean Kohlhase, who finished with four kills.
 
UH scored 12 of the first 13 points of Set 1 and without hardly breaking a sweat finished the game with four aces while hitting .522. The Warriors sided-out at 89 percent in a set that lasted only 15 minutes.
 
Set 2 was much like the first as Hawai'i jumped out to a 15-5 lead at the media timeout. Solbrig led the way with seven kills as the Warriors took a 2-0 lead in the match. For the third consecutive set, the Warriors led 15-5 at the media timeout. UH served eight aces and did not commit a hitting error in 15 attempts.
 
In the day's opening match, Pepperdine defeated Ball State, 25-13, 25-23, 25-21. Michael Wexter led the Waves with 12 kills and 12 digs while Kaleb Denmark added 11 kills, hitting .579. The Waves hit .393 for the match compared to .167 for the Cardinals, who were led by Ben Chinnici's 13 kills.
