SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.—The University of Hawai'i men's tennis team (3-6, 0-0 Big West) fell in a late night battle against San Francisco, 1-4 on Wednesday night. The two teams squared off at the indoor tennis courts at the Olympic Club due to inclement weather.
The match started with singles and did not have to play doubles.
Hawai'i's No. 1
Andre Ilagan got back into the win column with a close, straight set win over Ryan Marker, 6-4, 7-6 (4). It marked the freshman's fifth dual match win of the season to tie teammate
Lucas Labrunie for the team-high in overall wins. Ilagan is now 5-2 overall.
The Rainbow Warriors took three of the six matches to three sets. No. 3
Blaz Seric took the first set before falling in a second set tie-breaker to force a third set which USF's Paul Giraud edged out Seric by a break, 3-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4. The Dons clinched the match on Court No. 4 with USF's Phuc Huynh holding off UH's
Tristan Martins, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4.
UH will conclude their northern California roadtrip at the Golden State Invitational co-hosted by Sacramento State and UC Davis. The tournament runs from Friday, March 8 – Saturday, March 9. The eight-team tourney will feature Sacramento State, UC Davis, Hawai'i, Fresno State, Grand Canyon, New Mexico State, Nevada, St. Mary's (CA). Matches will be played at both the Sacramento State Collegiate Courts and UC Davis Marya Welch Tennis Center.
