PISMO BEACH, Calif. – The No. 6 University of Hawai'i beach volleyball won two of three matches on the second day of the Big West Challenge Sunday at Pismo Beach. The SandBows (18-7) defeated No. 9 Long Beach State and Sacramento State each via a 5-0 shutout, before falling to No. 7 Cal Poly, 3-2.
UH finished 5-1 over two days of competition against its league foes. Prior to its final match versus host Cal Poly, UH had won its first five contests via shutout and dropped just one set overall. Among the wins was an impressive a 5-0 sweep of LBSU on Sunday. It was UH's 10th win in the last 11 meetings with the 49ers, including the last six straight. UH also easily dispatched Sacramento State to move to 3-0 all-time against the Hornets.
However, in the final match of the day, the host Mustangs got the better of UH for the first time in eight all-time meetings. Cal Poly held a 2-1 lead after taking the top two flights.
Hi'ilawe Huddleston and
Kylin Loker knotted the score 2-2 following a three-set victory over Kat Wright and Jayelin Lombard. But the Mustangs closed out the victory when Sam Manley and Delaney Peranich rallied past
Paige Dreeuws and
Sofia Russo, 16-21, 28-26, 15-12, on the No. 5 court.
Despite the loss to the Mustangs a pair of Rainbow Wahine entered the UH record books. One day after
Ari Homayun became the school's all-time wins leader and
Emily Maglio hit 100 career wins, it was the No. 3 pair of
Morgan Martin and
Pani Napoleon who made history. By winning all three of their matches on Sunday by straight sets, the duo set a new UH record with 32 straight sets won. The former record was 28 by the pair of Homayun and
Amy Ozee last year.
Martin and Napoleon have not dropped a single set since being paired together in the Heineken Hawaii Invitational on March 16 and have gone a perfect 16-0 since. The 16-match win streak is the fourth-longest in school history.
The SandBows will have next weekend off before hosting Loyola Marymount, San Jose State, and Washington in the Queen's Cup, April 13-14, at Queen's Beach.
