Baseball Defeats No. 19 UC Irvine, 10-2, in Big West Opener

HONOLULU – The University of Hawaiʻi baseball team snapped UC Irvine's eight-game winning streak with a 10-2 win on Friday night at Les Murakami Stadium in the Big West Conference opener for both teams.

Hawaiʻi (11-14, 1-0 BWC) has now scored 25 runs in its last two games. The Rainbow Warriors, who were squaring off with All-American pitcher Andre Pallante, held a 4-1 lead until breaking the game wide open with six runs in the sixth.

UC Irvine (16-5, 0-1 BWC) entered the weekend ranked in the various national polls - as high as No. 19 in the Baseball America Top 25.

The Rainbow Warriors got the scoring going with a pair of second inning runs. With one out, Brennen Hancock singled and Maaki Yamazaki walked to set up the threat. Both went on to score on Tyler Murray's double over the right fielder's head.

The lead stretched to 4-0 in the bottom of the third. Daylen Calicdan, who led off the inning with a walk, scored on an Ethan Lopez single to right to make it 3-0. Dallas Duarte's sacrifice fly to right plated Alex Baeza for the four-run edge.

The Anteaters got on the scoreboard when Brandon Lewis scored on a wild pitch in the fourth to cut UH's lead down to 4-1.

The sixth inning saw a huge offensive output for the Rainbow Warriors with six runs in the frame. UH showed patience at the plate with the first four batters walking to open the inning including Scotty Scott bringing in a run with an RBI walk. Calicdan followed with a sacrifice fly to plate Murray for a 6-1 edge. After UC Irvine elected to intentionally walk Baeza to load the bases, Lopez unloaded the bases with a triple for a 9-1 lead. Hancock capped the scoring in the sixth with an RBI groundout to make it 10-1.

The Anteaters cut into the lead to make it 10-2 on a passed ball to score John Jensen from third in the seventh inning.

Starting pitcher Aaron Davenport went 5.1 innings, yielding just one run on four hits with four strikeouts for his first career win. Colin Ashworth followed by going the next 2.2 innings with two strikeouts, and one run on two hits. Scott Bellina went the final 1.0 inning without giving up a run.

At the plate, Lopez went 2-for-5 with four RBIs, while Murray finished 1-for-2 with two RBIs and two walks.

Game two of the series between UH and UC Irvine is Saturday, March 30 at 6:35 p.m. at Les Murakami Stadium.
