Baseball Drops 7-5 Decision at Ohio State

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The University of Hawaiʻi baseball team dropped a close game at Ohio State on Saturday, falling by a score of 7-5 to the Buckeyes at Bill Davis Stadium in Columbus, Ohio.

All three games of the series have been back and forth with Hawaiʻi (9-14) being outscored by Ohio State (13-10) by a combined five runs.

Getting the start on the mound, Preseason All-American Dylan Thomas struck out six batters in 4.0 innings, allowing seven runs on 11 hits. Thomas avoided damage in the first three innings before yielding three in the fourth and four in the fifth.

Aaron Davenport took over on the mound for UH and struck out a career-high eight batters in 4.0 innings in relief. The freshman gave up just two hits and two walks to Ohio State.

A three-run fourth inning beginning with a solo home run from Brady Cherry gave the Buckeyes the lead.

Hawaiʻi managed two runs in the fifth to cut into the OSU lead at 3-2. Kennelly's RBI groundout scored Maaki Yamazaki from third base, and Scotty Scott was able to score from third on a wild pitch later in the inning.

Four more runs for Ohio State in the fifth put the score up to 7-2 before the 'Bows began chipping away. Kennelly came up with another big play, knocking an RBI single to left to plate Dallas Duarte in the sixth.

Starting as the designated hitter, Brennen Hancock delivered two runs to UH's total with a single to score Alex Baeza and Scott in the seventh. The Rainbow Warriors brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth after an infield single from Ethan Lopez, but were unable to get any more runs across on the day.

Lopez and Daylen Calicdan paced the UH offense with two hits apiece on Saturday.

Hawaiʻi and Ohio State will conclude their four-game series on Sunday, March 24 at Bill Davis Stadium at 1:05 p.m. ET (7:05 a.m. HT).
