Hawai‘i Back in Action at the NCAA Championships

AUSTIN, Tex.—For the second day in a row, the University of Hawai'i swimming and diving team was represented in the NCAA Championships at the Lee & Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center on Friday.

Junior Phoebe Hines competed in her second event of the championships as she placed No. 41 in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:47.06. Hines mirrored what she did a year ago on the national stage as she'll compete in three different events. The difference being this season was her competing in the 200, compared to last season she was a part of the 1000 freestyle.

Sophomore Karolina Hajkova saw her first action as she was a part of the field in the 100 backstroke. Hajokva placed at No. 47 with a finishing time of 53.23, narrowly missing her personal best of 52.23.

Both Hines and Hajkova will be in action tomorrow (Mar. 23) as part of the final day of activity. Joining them will be sophomore diver Ivy Houser as she'll make her debut in the NCAA Championships in the platform dive. Hajkova will be a participant in the 200 backstroke, while Hines will have a go in the 1650 free. Entering the event, Hines is currently ranked No. 1 in the 1650 with a time of 15:41.35.

UH has not had a woman's national champion since 1983 when Jeanne Childs placed No. 1 in both the 100 and 200 breaststroke. Childs did it the year before in 1982, and the only other national champion in program history came in 1975 when Barbara Mitchell won the 200 individual medley.
