Rally Falls Short in 6-5 Defeat at Ohio State

COLUMBUS, Ohio - In another back-and-forth game, the University of Hawaiʻi baseball team fell by a 6-5 final score to Ohio State at Bill Davis Stadium in Columbus, Ohio on Friday.

Trailing 6-4 in the ninth, Hawaiʻi (9-13) pulled to within one on an RBI groundout from Ethan Lopez and had the tying run on third base before Ohio State (12-10) escaped with the victory.

The 'Bows, which posted nine hits on the day, stormed back from a three-run deficit to take the lead in the fifth. The Buckeyes were able to bounce back, however, leveling the score in the bottom of the fifth and taking the lead for good in the bottom of the seventh.

UH had an early scoring chance in the first after a double from Daylen Calicdan followed by an Alex Baeza single put runners on the corners with one out. OSU starter Griffan Smith was able to get the last two outs to avoid any runs.

The Buckeyes picked up their first two runs on solo home runs off the bat of leadoff hitter Dominic Canzone in the first and third innings. The Ohio State lead stretched to 3-0 on an RBI single from Kobie Foppe in the fourth.

The Rainbow Warriors exploded for four runs in the top of the fifth to take a 4-3 lead. As part of the busy inning, Scotty Scott picked up an RBI single followed by two more runs on a Calicdan single. Lopez closed the scoring in the inning with a sacrifice fly.

Brady Cherry leveled the scoring at 4-4 with Ohio State's third solo home run of the game in the fifth. Two more runs runs for the Buckeyes came in the bottom of the seventh on RBIs from Conner Pohl and Zach Dezenzo for a 6-4 lead.

UH's ninth-inning rally was set up by a Scott single, Calicdan's walk and Baeza's sacrifice bunt to put runners on second and third. Lopez's groundout scored Scott, but that is as close as the Rainbow Warriors would get.

On the mound, Li'i Pontes pitched 5.0 innings with four runs on seven hits while striking out three. Colin Ashworth took the loss in 2.0 innings with two runs on three hits, followed by Carter Loewen, who did not give up a hit in the eighth.

The two sides will square off for game three of the four-game series on Saturday, March 23 at Bill Davis Stadium in Columbus, Ohio. Saturday's game will get underway at 3:05 p.m. ET (9:05 a.m. HT).
