Rainbow Wahine Suffer Setback at Long Beach State, 56-40

LONG BEACH, Calif.--  The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team had its three-game road win streak snapped by Long Beach State on Saturday afternoon with a final score of 56-40 at Walter Pyramid.

The Rainbow Wahine (9-13, 5-4) dropped only their second game of their last six against Big West Conference opponents and will stay in the middle of the pack in the conference standings. The Beach (7-15, 4-5) have split their last four games at 2-2 and will host UC Irvine on Thursday, before visiting UH next Saturday.

Freshman forward Myrrah Joseph highlighted the day for the 'Bows' offense, scoring 15 points, pulling down nine rebounds, and dishing out three assists, all three career highs. The rest of the offense struggled on the second game of the road trip as UH shot a combined 25 percent from the floor.

Throughout the last six games where UH has gone 4-2, a common factor for the 'Bows' success was their competitive starts. A 9-1 start by LBSU put UH in an early hole, one it couldn't shoot out of throughout the afternoon.

The Beach never trailed in the game and shot 70 percent from beyond the arc in the first half, leading to a double-digit lead at halftime, along with momentum to start the third quarter. Joseph worked inside the paint to keep UH within striking distance, but the hot shooting by the Beach built their lead to as much as 22 in the third frame.

As a team, UH showed positive signs leading to its recent success before the loss at LBSU. The Bows' won the rebounding battle for a third consecutive game with a 36-32 advantage, including 13 offensive boards. LBSU committed 17 turnovers with UH swiping 10 steals.

UH will now head back to the island of O'ahu for three straight games at the Stan Sheriff Center, beginning with UC Santa Barbara on Wednesday, Feb. 13 at 7:00 p.m. HT. The 'Bows knocked off the Gauchos on the road back on Jan. 26 with a score of 47-35.
