HONOLULU – The No. 5 University of Hawaii beach volleyball squad went 1-1 on the second and final day of the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Beach Classic Sunday at Queen's Beach. UH fell to No. 1 UCLA, 5-0, before taking down No. 11 Stanford, 3-2.
In UH's first match of the day, the SandBows took on defending national champs UCLA in a rematch of last year's NCAA semifinals, won by the Bruins. UH fell, 5-0, a score that did not reflect the competitiveness of the match. UCLA won Courts 3 and 4 in straight sets to go up 2-0, but the other three courts went the distance with the match's ultimate outcome riding on the results of a trio of three-set matches.
UH had its best opportunity on Court 2 where
Emily Maglio and
Hi'ilawe Huddleston had two match points on Sarah Sponcil and Lily Justine in the second set. However, the Bruin pair rallied to take Set 2 and squeezed by in the ensuing third set for an eventual 14-21, 22-20, 15-12 win. UCLA also rallied a set down on Court 5 with Megan Muret and Izzy Carey getting past
Paige Dreeuws and
Jenna Banz. It also took three sets for Megan and Nicole McNamara to dispatch
Amy Ozee and
Morgan Martin on the top court.
In the second match of the day UH beat Stanford, 3-2, going up 3-0 to quickly secure the win, before dropping the final top two flights in three sets.
Ari Homayun and
Julia Scoles capped an impressive two days by blitzing Maddie Dailey Morgan Hentz 21-9, 21-14 on Court 3. The pair went 3-1 on the weekend with Scoles named the tournament's most outstanding attacker. Dreeuws and Banz won on Court 5 in straight sets, while
Kylin Loker and
Pani Napoleon clinched the UH victory on Court 4.
UCLA captured the tournament with a perfect 4-0 record over the weekend, including a 4-1 win over Pepperdine on Sunday. The Bruins dropped just one point all weekend.
The SandBows will have the next weekend off before heading to Manhattan Beach, Calif., for the East Meets West Challenge, March 9-10. UH will face TCU, Florida State, Florida International, and LSU during the two-day tournament.
