Akiu Invited To U.S. National Team Open Tryouts

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—University of Hawai'i women's volleyball Reyn "Tita" Akiu has been invited to compete in the U.S. Women's National Team Open Volleyball Tryouts next week (March 1-3) at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Akiu will be amongst 45 liberos vying for a spot on the U.S. Women's National Team and the U.S. Collegiate National Team programs. It will be Akiu's third time at the tryouts—she went after her sophomore year at Texas Tech and again last season after transferring home to play for the Rainbow Wahine.

Each athlete will have one tryout session on Friday, one morning and one afternoon session on Saturday and one morning session on Sunday. Three-time Olympic gold medalist and U.S. Olympic Hall of Famer Karch Kiraly and the U.S. Women's National Team staff will lead the tryout process.

Akiu was a standout in her only season as a Rainbow Wahine after playing her first three years at Texas Tech. She finished her senior season posting 465 total digs which ranks her at No. 4 in the UH record books for digs in a single-season. She ended her collegiate career breaking the UH single-match record with 34 digs against Baylor in the NCAA First Round match in Eugene, Ore. Akiu started all 27 matches and played in all 102 sets. She had double-digits in digs in all but one match this season and recorded seven matches with 20+ digs.
