HONOLULU — The University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team opened its "Our Team, Hawai'i's Team" spring series with a four-set loss to Louisville on Monday at Bankoh Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.
The Rainbow Wahine pulled out a tight opening set before the Cardinals of the Atlantic Coast Conference claimed the next three in a 26-28, 25-22, 25-18, 25-17 decision.
Cha'lei Reid led UH with 13 kills and three aces.
Miliana Sylvester added seven kills on .375 hitting and was in on six blocks. Libero
Victoria Leyva came up with 11 digs and setter
Adrianna Arquette finished with 28 assists and eight digs.
The Rainbow Wahine starting lineup included two newcomers in transfers
Panna Ratkai and Maëli Cormier. Ratkai finished with eight kills and three blocks and Cormier added five kills in their Mānoa debuts.
Louisville, which reached the NCAA Tournament's Sweet 16 last season, was led by Chloe Chicoine's 14 kills on .303 hitting and 14 digs. Chloe Meester also had a double-double with 12 kills and 11 digs.
UH moved out to a 15-12 lead midway through the first set and Louisville went on a 4-1 run to take a 21-20 lead. The 'Bows reclaimed the lead and converted on its fourth attempt at set point when Sylvester and Cormier teamed on UH's third block of the set.
Louisville went on a 6-0 run midway through the second set and this time the Cardinals held on to even the match at a set apiece.
Set 3 was tied at 8-8 when Louisville went on a 7-1 run. UH closed to 18-16 on an ace by
Leilani Lopez but the Cardinals pulled away again with a four-point surge and finished off the set to take the lead in the match.
The fourth set followed a similar script with Louisville putting together a 7-1 run to open up a 20-12 lead and the Cardinals finished off the match.
The series concludes Tuesday with the rematch at 7 p.m. at Bankoh Arena at Stan Sheriff Center. Admission is free.
