HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i softball team (8-2) held off New Mexico, 2-1 in a pitcher's duel. Hawai'i's
Brittany Hitchcock earned her third win firing a complete game three-hitter on Wednesday night at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
Hitchcock struck out a season-high nine batters while walking just one. She faced just 25 batters and allowed one run in seven innings.
New Mexico's Kiana Spencer also was efficient, facing just 24 batters. She allowed two runs on five hits with no walks and four strikeouts in six innings of work.
Hawai'i got on the scoreboard first, posting one run on
Nicole Lopez's double ripped down the leftfield line that drove in Brittnee Ross who had led off the game with an infield single to short.
In the fourth, UH's
Callee Heen launched a solo shot high over the rightfield fence to give UH a 2-0 lead. It was Heen's sixth home run of the season and her 29th of her career.
New Mexico got one run back in the sixth on an RBI groundout to second. But UH got out of the inning with a deep fly to left that
Bree Soma sprinted to chase down and snag to end the inning.
Hawai'i returns to the field on Thursday night on the opening day of the Hawai'i Invitational tournament that will run from Thursday, Feb. 21 – Saturday, Feb. 23 at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. Hawai'I, Canisius, DePaul and New Mexico will all be in the tournament.
