Softball Splits Doubleheader To Conclude Boyd Gaming Rebels Classic

LAS VEGAS, Nev.—The University of Hawai'i softball team (7-2, 0-0 Big West) split its doubleheader on Saturday to conclude their part in the Boyd Gaming Rebels Classic in Las Vegas, Nev. The Rainbow Wahine defeated Weber State in five innings (by mercy rule), 9-0 in the morning at Eller Media Stadium, but fell in the afternoon to SeattleU, 5-3 at the Stephanie Lynn Craig Softball Complex in Henderson, Nev.

Senior pitcher Hitchcock fired a five-inning, complete game shutout, spacing four hits while striking out a season-high seven batters. She did not issue a walk. She improves to 2-1 on the season.
 
After retiring Weber State in order to start the game, Hawai'i jumped out to a 3-0 in the bottom of the first inning. Brittnee Rossi led things off with a single to right and Nicole Lopez then followed by hitting into a fielder's choice that erased Rossi at second. Cheeks Ramos then ripped a double to the left-centerfield gap to score a sprinting Lopez from first.  After a groundout, Alyssa Sojka blasted her first home run of the season for two more runs to give UH a 3-0 lead.
 
After a quiet second inning for both sides, UH posted three run in the third. Lopez and Ramos got back-to-back singles to start things off with one out in the third. Ramos' base hit drove in Lopez from second. Callee Heen then launched a two-run home run to give the 'Bows a 6-0 lead. It marked Heen's fifth home run of the season, 28th of her career and third of the tournament. After three complete innings, UH held a 6-0 lead over the Wildcats.
 
In the top of the fourth, Weber State's Chloe Camarero led off with a double and later an error put runners at the corners with one out. But Hitchcock then picked up her sixth strike out and then got a groundout to short to snuff out the Wildcat rally.
 
In the bottom of the fourth, Ramos blasted a three-run home run off of newly inserted pitcher, Donaldson. The homer gave UH a 9-0 lead. It marked Ramos' ninth career home run.
 
Weber State's Tatiana Su'esu'e threw 3.2 innings, allowing eight runs on eith hits with a walk and a strikeout. Kate Donaldson got the final out, allowing one run on one hit.

For the first time in four-straight games, Hawai'i did not score in the first inning. Instead, the Redhawks got off to a quick start, taking the lead right off the bat on a three-run home run by Bailey Thompson.
 
The Redhawks extended their lead to 5-0 in the fourth. Breanna Timmons hit a solo home run to centerfield and later, with runners at the corners, Alyson Matriotti scored on a double-steal attempt.
 
Hawai'i's Sojka then blasted her second home run of the day. This one sailed over the leftfield fence and drove in Heen who had walked to start the inning. Sojka now has four home runs in her career.
 
The 'Bows got one more run back in the fifth when Rossi led the inning off with a home run to centerfield.
 
UH started  Izzy Dino suffered her first loss, dropping her record to 2-1. She gave up five runs on seven hits with a walk and two strikeouts. Reliever Emily Klee came into the game and threw three scoreless innings. She gave up just one hit with a pair of strikeouts.
 
SeattleU pitcher Andie Larkins earned the win to improve to 2-0. She gave up three runs on five hits with two walks and a strikeout. Carley Nance slid over from first base to relieve Larkins in the fifth inning. She stymied the 'Bows, allowing no runs while giving up four hits with a walk and a strikeout.
 
Hawaii out hit the Redhawks 9-8 but left nine runners on base, while Seattle was more efficient leaving just three runners on base. Seattle also turned a pair of double plays to UH's one. In UH's four games in the tourney, Sojka led the 'Bows, hitting .700 (7-for-10) and driving in eight runs while scoring four. The loss snapped UH's five-game win streak.
  
The Rainbow Wahine return home to host a single game against New Mexico on Wednesday, Feb. 20 before beginning the Hawaii Invitational tournament. Canisius, DePaul and New Mexico will all be competing in the three-day tourney (Feb. 21-23).
