LAS VEGAS, Nev.—The University of Hawai'i men's tennis team (2-1, 0-0 Big West) swept its dual match doubleheader to start the UNLV Tournament on Friday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex in Las Vegas, Nev.  The Rainbow Warriors edged out Weber State, 4-3 then came back in the afternoon to dispatch UC Riverside, 4-2.
 
In the morning against Weber State, it was the Wildcats who took an early 1-0 lead as they captured the doubles point with wins on Courts No. 1 and 3. UH's No. 2 team of Lucas Labrunie and Andre Ilagan did notch a win over WSU's Bo-han Li and Cezary Walkus, 6-2 on the No. 2 court.
 
Weber State went up 2-0 after winning on the No. 1 court. But the 'Bows battled back and leapfrogged ahead after winning three matches to take a 3-2 lead. UH rookie, No. 2, Ilagan, posted a dominant, straight-set win over Junhao Ye, 6-3, 6-0. No. 6 Tristan Martin then knocked off WSU's Li, 6-3, 6-1 to even the match at 2-2. Hawai'i's No. 5 Chia-Hua Lu gave UH a 3-2 lead, defeating Nick Werner, 6-4, 6-1. Weber state then tied the match at 3-3 with a three-set victory by Paul Ohde over UH's Asad Siyyid on the No. 4 court, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. The Rainbow Warriors' No. 3 Labrunie clinched the match at 4-3, as he pulled away from Weber State's Michiel Van Schoor to win in three, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.
 
In the afternoon against Big West rival, UC Riverside, Hawai'i shuffled their lineup and controlled the match from the beginning. In doubles, UH's No. 3 team of Lu and Simon Telo Alves cruised to a 6-2 win over Anderson Ju and Gilbert Chung. The Highlanders' No. 2 team of Kyle McCann and Andreas Whelan-Merediz then slipped past Blaz Seric and Asad Siyyid in a tough match that went the distance, 7-6 (3). UH's No. 1 duo of Ilagan and Labrunie then edged out UCR's Nabil Abdallah and Fillip Engstrom in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (3) to secure the doubles point and the early 1-0 lead.
 
Hawai'i never lost the lead en route to the victory. Ilagan, who flipped courts and played at No. 1 for the first time this season, swept UCR's McCann, 6-3, 6-1. After falling on the No. 4 court, UH's No. 3 Labrunie coasted to a 6-3, 6-2 straight set win over UC Riverside's Vignesh Subramanyan, 6-3, 6-2. UCR's No. 2 Abdallah outlasted UH's Seric by just one break for the win, 6-1, 0-6, 6-4. But Hawai'i's No. 5 Tristan Martin held off David Ramirez in a tough battle, 6-4, 6-4 to clinch the win for the Rainbow Warriors.
 
The 'Bows will play two more dual matches in the tournament this weekend before heading home. Hawai'i will play the host school, UNLV on Saturday at 12:00 pm HT followed by New Mexico State on Sunday morning at 8:00 a.m. HT. All matches are hosted by UNLV at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
