Moscow, Idaho—The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team dropped only its second game of the previous five with a loss on the road at the University of Idaho Saturday afternoon, 67-52.
The Rainbow Wahine (6-6) move back to .500 on the season with one more remaining nonconference game before starting the Big West Conference portion of the schedule on Jan. 9. The Vandals (5-4) avenged the 69-61 loss against UH last season on O'ahu with the win and have split their previous four games of their schedule.
Shots for the 'Bows had a hard time finding the bottom of the net as the visiting squad shot 33 percent from the floor and did not have a player register double-digits in the scoring column.
The Vandals built on an early lead from the first quarter and went into the half with a 12-point lead at 43-31. UH battled back in the third quarter with a slight advantage at 13-9, but Idaho turned up the defensive pressure in the final frame, outscoring the 'Bows 15-8.
UH did not lead at any point in the game as the Vandals went wire-to-wire. Even though UH came in under their turnover average per game with 12, the host made the most of the miscues with 14 points off turnovers. Coming into the game, when UH controlled the battle of the boards, the green and white stand undefeated at 5-0. Idaho managed the rebounding struggle with a 36-31 advantage.
Junior forward
Amy Atwell led the team with nine points and was tied with the team-lead in rebounds with six, along with freshman point guard
Nae Nae Calhoun. Senior guard
Courtney Middap followed up her career-day with 10 assists against Hope International with a solid showing of a team-high six assists and six points.
The 'Bows will have a season-long 10-day hiatus as they'll break away for the holiday season. UH will be back to take on the University of Pennsylvania on Tuesday, Dec. 31, at 2 p.m. HT inside the Stan Sheriff Center.
