Rainbow Wahine Fall To Penn On Final Day of 2019

HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team dropped its final game of the non-conference schedule with a 70-55 loss to visiting the University of Pennsylvania, Tuesday afternoon at the Stan Sheriff Center.

The Rainbow Wahine (6-7) came up short of finishing the non-conference slate as one of two teams in the Big West Conference to have a winning record entering conference play. Cal State Fullerton will be the only squad going into 2020 with a record above the .500 mark. The Quakers (9-1) continue their hot stretch to begin the season, extending their win streak to five since Dec. 2, their only loss of the season came at the hands of ACC powerhouse Duke.

A slow start for the Quakers didn't last long as senior guard Julissa Tago scored five quick points for a 7-3 advantage for the green and white. Penn swung momentum with a 14-6 run ending the first quarter and a score of 17-13.

The second quarter produced much of the same as Penn outscored UH 23-13, leading to a 14-point lead heading into the half. Even though the 'Bows pulled within single digits on several occasions, the Quakers kept the home team at bay, never letting up in the second half.

The Quakers went inside and outside on the 'Bows defense to notch the win, hitting nine three-pointers and finishing with 36 points in the paint.

Much like they did at Idaho on Dec. 21, UH continues to cut down on the turnovers. Against the Vandals, UH tallied 12 miscues, against Penn, nine. Rebounds favored the visitors, resulting in a 38-32 advantage on the boards, and 13-second chance points off 11 offensive rebounds.

Junior forward Amy Atwell led UH in scoring with 12 points and pulled down five rebounds. On the other side, Kayla Padilla led all scorers with 23 points, hitting 9-of-23 from the floor.

The 'Bows will have another long break as they enter 2020, waiting over a week till tipping off with CSUN on Jan. 9 on the road.
