Hawai‘i Cruises Past Hope International As Neubert Sets a Career-High

HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i took care of business Sunday afternoon with an 86-49 victory over visiting Hope International University at the Stan Sheriff Center.

The Rainbow Wahine (6-5) are back over the .500 mark with their second consecutive win and will have two more non-conference games in 2019. The Royals (10-3), a member of the Golden State Athletic Conference in the NAIA have dropped three of their last four games, after starting the season 9-1.

The upstart Royals came out with a spark taking an 8-3 lead in the first four minutes of action. Shortly after the first media timeout of the afternoon, the 'Bows were off and running. A 23-4 run from the midway point of the 1st quarter to the same mark of the second quarter gave UH a 29-12 advantage with HIU playing catch up.

Leaning on the defensive production and forcing 10 turnovers resulting in 22 points off turnovers, UH carried a 38-26 lead into halftime. The 'Bows wouldn't let loose of the lead throughout the next 20 minutes.

"We didn't play our best basketball in the first half, but it started to come together as the game went on," said head coach Laura Beeman. "One of the many things I love about this team is how they share the ball. We weren't a full-strength tonight, and we still moved the ball well."

UH showcased its best offensive output of the season with not only a season-high in points but hitting 53 percent from the floor as a team for a season-high. The 'Bows had three players register double-digit points as freshman forward Kasey Neubert finished with a team-high 22 points shooting a perfect 8-for-8 from the field and a flawless 6-for-6 from the free-throw line.

Following the scoring lead of Neubert was fellow forward Myrrah Joseph. The sophomore scored a season-high 15 points in what was the first start of her career. Senior guard Julissa Tago added 10 points and a game-high seven rebounds.

Senior guard Courtney Middap played her most well-rounded game of the season, dishing out a career-high 10 assists with no turnovers, along with nine points. As Middap set the pace on the assists, UH as a team handed out 24 assists for a new season-high.

UH will wrap up the fall semester of classes with finals this week and will then head to the University of Idaho on Dec. 21. The trip to the Gem State will be the program's first since 2012, and it will be a homecoming for Coeur d'Alene, Idaho native Lauren Rewers.
