Last week...
After sweeping the California central coast teams and previous league-leaders UC Santa Barbara and Cal Poly this past week, the Rainbow Wahine vaulted up the standings past the former league-leaders to sit atop the Big West standings by a half-game with a 10-2 BWC record. The Rainbow Wahine came from behind, winning the final two sets to edge out the Highlanders in five sets, 25-19, 22-25,21-25, 25-18, 17-15. Then, the Rainbow Wahine defeated two-time defending Big West champions Cal Poly in four sets, 25-15, 22-25, 25-20, 25-23.

Record Performances Propel Hellvig, Okino To BWC Weekly Awards - Freshman Hanna Hellvig averaged 3.56 kills, 1.11 digs and 0.67 blocks per set while hitting .308 (32-8-78) for the week. The 6-foot-2 outside hitter led UH with a combined 32 kills in the two matches. She compiled a career-high 19 kills on .304 (19-5-46) hitting in a nail-biting, marathon five-set win over the Gauchos on Friday. She also tallied six digs, two assists, a block and an ace for a team-high 20.5 points. Hellvig then helped avenge UH's earlier loss to Cal Poly by posting a team-high 13 kills in four sets while hitting .313 (13-3-32) in the four-set win Sunday. She contributed five blocks (one solo) and had four digs to go toward a team-high 16.0 points. Hellvig has tallied 18 double-digit kill matches in her rookie season, leading the team in kills in 12 of the last 15 contests. She continues to lead UH with 284 kills and is second on the team with 182 digs and third in total blocks (66). Overall, Hellvig leads UH with 284 kills (over 100 more kills than her closest teammate, fellow freshman Amber Igede who has 165 kills). Hellvig has led UH in kills in 11 of the last 15 matches. She has posted 18 double-figure kills matches this season. Overall, Hellvig is averaging a 3.12 kills per set (amongst active players) and is second on the team with 182 digs and third on the team with 37.0 total blocks. Junior libero Okino posted a team-high combined 35 digs over the weekend, helping limit the Gauchos to a .218 hitting percentage and the Mustangs to just a .123 mark. Okino recorded a career-high 25 digs in a five-set thriller over the Gauchos. Although she had just seven digs to start the match, Okino finished strong with 18 digs over the last two sets. She posted 12 digs (which matched her previous season match-high) in the fourth set alone. She also produced six digs in the decisive fifth set. Her 25 digs marked the highest amount for a UH player since Tita Akiu had 34 scoops against Baylor in last year's NCAA Tournament's First Round. The Honolulu native had 10 digs against the Mustangs to secure her seventh double-digit match this season. She also had four assists in each match and served up an ace against Cal Poly.

Iosia leading Hawai'i into battle - The undeniable leader of the Rainbow Wahine has been senior setter/outside hitter Norene Iosia. For the last five weeks, Iosia has resumed her role from last year as setter/outside hitter. She continues to climb the UH career record books. She is No. 5 in service aces with 125 in her career. she is chasing associate head coach Angelica Ljungqvist who is No. 4 with 133 career aces during her standout UH career.  Iosia is also ranked No. 12 with 1,101 career digs and remains at No. 9 in career assists with 2,991. She needs just nine more assists to reach the 3,000 assist milestone--which only eight other Rainbow Wahine setters have ever accomplished in history. Keep in mind, Iosia is on pace to reach 3,000 assists even while serving as a setter in a 6-2 offense the past two seasons.
Ever since UH found themselves struggling and down 0-2 to Cal State Fullerton five weeks ago, Iosia was called back into front row duty as an outside hitter even through she had not hit or blocked the entire season since the beginning of two-a-days. She put the team on her back, as the coaches reverted to their 6-2 offense from a year ago to start Set 3. UH has used this offense ever since then. UH's double-double machine, Iosia has posted 15 double-doubles this season--the rest of the Rainbow Wahine have 17 combined double-doubles this year. Iosia has 59 double-doubles in her career to go with five triple doubles from last season. In her senior season Iosia is doing everything she can to help the Rainbow Wahine. She leads UH with 488 assists, 34 service aces and 257 digs. She also has recorded 51 kills and 18 blocks in nine matches.

Manoa Roofing Company - After starting the year out-blocking their first 10 opponents, the 'Bows were outblocked in five of the next seven matches. But the 'Bows have bounced back to outblock their opponents in the last five of their last six matches 64.0-to41.5. Overall this year, UH has out-blocked their opponents, 238.5-to-168.0. Currently UH is ranked at No. 14 in total team blocks in the NCAA DI and No. 22 in blocks per set (2.62). It is the most blocks for UH since the 2015 season when UH led the NCAA for much of that year in blocks. Through 25 games, the 2015 squad had 275.5 total blocks, This season, UH has recorded double-digits in blocks 14 matches this season while out-blocking the teams across the net from them 17 times in 23 total matches.

Newcomers Making Huge Impact - The nine newcomers (including five freshmen) have made an immediate impact. Through 23 matches, the nine newcomers account for 865 of UH's 1211 kills (71%), 798 of 1,331 digs (59%), and 171.5 of UH's 238.5 total blocks (72%). The freshmen alone account for 623 kills (51%), 386 digs (29%), and a whopping 132 total blocks (55%).

Van Sickle Returns To Spark Win Over UC Davis - Junior outside hitter Brooke Van Sickle made her return to the starting line-up in UH's most recent match vs. UCSB. The redshirt junior had missed four matches due to an injury suffered vs. UC Irvine on 10//4. She played sparingly over the last four matches before getting the start vs. Cal Poly on 11/3.
Overall, the junior transfer from Oregon is fourth on the team with 143 kills. She is hitting at a .221 clip averaging 2.13 kills per set. She also has added 148 digs, 35 total blocks, 20 assists and 13 service aces. But what doesn't show up on the stat line is her volleyball IQ who stabilizes the defense when she is patrolling the backline.

'Bows in the middle - UH's starting two middle hitters--Skyler Williams and Amber Igiede--lead the conference ranked at No. 1 and No. 2 in hitting percentage. Williams continues to lead the Big West with a .393 hitting % (152-36-295) while Igiede is right behine with a .359 hitting % (166-44-340). The dynamic duo are both also in the BWC top 10 in blocks with Igiede ranked NO. 2 in the league and No. 1 at UH with 105 total blocks averaging 1.30 per set. Williams comes into the week ranked at No. 6 with 82 total blocks and 1.04 blocks per set. Igiede's blocks per set also ranks her at No. 26 in the NCAA DI standings with Williams coming in at No. 135. Igiede, who is a freshman from Baton Rouge, La., is second on the team with 165 kills. She is just the second player to metriculate to UH from Louisiana, following former UH great Kim Wlloughby. 15 of her 105 total blocks are solo blocks. Williams, a junior from Bellflower, Calif., is currently third on the team with 152 kills (1.92 kills per set).
