HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team opened their 2019 season on Thursday with the first day of the Rainbow Wahine Invitational. After a few rain delays halted play in the morning, it was Washington State who finished strong, winning five of six singles matches.
In doubles however, Hawai'i and Washington State split four matches. Washington State started off with Michaela Bayerlova and Yang Lee defeating Hawai'i's
Nikola Dolakova and
Maayan Sela while UH's
Michelle Pits and
Alzbeta Houbova fell to Jovana Knezevic and Ege Tomey, 6-3. The Rainbow Wahine duo of
Roxanne Resma and
Petra Melounova then held off WSU's Aneta Miksovska and Tiffany Mylonas by a break, 6-4. In their second doubles match of the day, UH's doubles team of Dolakova and Sela edged out the Cougars' Melissa Ates and Hikaru Sato.
UH's Dolakova came away with Hawai'i's lone singles win of the day, defeating Washington State's Sato in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2.
Hawai'i and Washington State will square off again on Friday, Jan. 4 at 10:00 a.m. for the second day of the Rainbow Wahine Invitational at the UH Tennis Complex.
