HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team opens its 2019 season hosting the Rainbow Wahine Invitational this weekend from Thursday, Jan. 3 – Saturday, Jan. 5. Matches will begin at 10:00 a.m. each day at the UH Tennis Complex. The 'Bows will take on Washington State and a few players from Hawai'i Pacific who will be playing independently in the three-day tournament.
 
The Rainbow Wahine are led by two-time defending Big West Player of the Year Petra Melounova. She entered the year at No. 51 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings. Also helping to lead the 'Bows this year are its two seniors—Roxanne Resma who is beginning her fourth year at UH and Mayaan Sela, a senior transfer from Pacific.  Other returnees to the veteran squad are juniors Nikola Dolakova, Alzbeta Houbova and Michelle Pits who were all key members of last year's team that captured the Big West Tournament and advanced to the second NCAA Championship tourney in program history.

Last year, after winning the Big West regular season title in 2017, the Rainbow Wahine captured its first Big West tournament championship to advance to the program's second NCAA tournament. Hawai'i recorded a 13-7 overall record while going 6-2 in the Big West.
