IRVINE, Calif.--University of Hawai'i junior women's tennis player
Alzbeta Houbova (Zilina, Slovakia/Sukromne Gymnasium Zilina) captured the first Big West Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week honors of the season as the only Rainbow Wahine to win all four of her singles and doubles matches in a pair of dual match wins. It also marked Houbova's first ever Big West Athlete of the Week award in her career.
Houbova was crucial to UH's success in back-to-back 4-3 team victories over Baylor and CSUN. Baylor entered the season ranked just outside the top 25 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll.
Houbova partnered with
Michelle Pits at No. 3 doubles, needing a win over Kris Sorokolet and Katelyn Parker to secure the doubles point for UH. The Hawai'i duo did just that with a 7-6 (4) win in the tiebreaker. Playing at No. 6 in the singles lineup against the Bears, Houbova rolled to a 6-4, 6-2 win over Stephanie Adames.
Hawai'i won its Big West opener against CSUN with Houbova again playing a key role. She moved up to No. 5 singles and held off Emma Roenholt, 6-4, 6-4. In doubles, Houbova and Pits found themselves as the deciding match to secure the doubles point for the early 1-0 lead. Houbova and Pits doubled up Roenholt and Sibel Demirbaga, 6-3, paving the way for the narrow win over the Matadors.
