HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team (2-0, 1-0 Big West) edged out CSUN, 4-3 in their Big West opener. Senior Maayan Sela clinched the match, outlasting her opponent in a grueling three set victory on Sunday afternoon.
 
A day after upsetting Baylor, the Rainbow Wahine were able to hold off CSUN to improve to 2-0 early in the season. Hawai'i started the day by earning the doubles point. UH's No. 2 duo of Nikola Dolakova and Sela nearly blanked CSUN's Skyla Alcon and Ana Isabel Fraile Toboso, 6-1. Hawai'i's No. 3 team of Michelle Pits and Alzbeta Houbova then defeated Emma Roenholt and Sibel Demirbaga, 6-3 to give UH a 1-0 lead in the match.
 
In singles, the Rainbow Wahine went up 3-1 with No. 1 Petra Melounova sweeping CSUN's Monika Van De Vondel, 6-4, 6-3 and No. 5 Houbova knocking off Roenholt, in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. But the Matadors would battle back to even the match at 3-3 as they captured wins on the No. 3 and No. 4 courts.
 
The match balanced on the shoulders of Sela on the No. 2 court. After falling in the first set, Sela fought her way back to win the second set by a tiebreaker to even her match at 1-1. In the third set, both players played through cramps/injuries knowing that was the deciding match. Maayan outlasted Jolene Coetzee by a break in the third to seal the win for the team, 5-7, 7-6(5), 6-4.
 
The Rainbow Wahine will conclude their homestand playing a dual match against Washington before hosting the two-day Weinman Foundation Invite, Jan. 18-19.
