NAPA, Calif.—The University of Hawai'i men's tennis team opened its 2018-19 season on the road at the 2018 Silverado Invitational held at the Silverado Resort and Spa in Napa, Calif. Four Rainbow Warriors competed on the first day of the three-day tournament.
Freshman
Andre Ilagan, a rookie out of Farrington High School and two-time HHSAA state singles champion, was the highlight of the opening day along with teammate
Lucas Labrunie who both won their doubles and in singles matches on the first day.
In doubles, both of Hawai'i's duos came out on top on the first day of competition. UH's
Blaz Seric and
Asad Siyyid rallied to defeat Liberty's Josh Wilson/Eddie Gutierrez, 8-7(7). Seric and Siyyid staved off a pair of match points to edge out the Wilson/Gutierrez for the win. Labrunie and Ilagan combined for an 8-3 win over Liberty's Farid Juri/Ian Sturgill.
In singles, Ilagan and Labrunie both won their opening matches. Ilagan held off Tulsa's Daniel Siddall in a tie-breaker in the first set and then by just one break in the second set, 7-6 (4), 6-4. Labunie blanked opponent Tom Thelwall Jones (Tulsa) in the first set then coasted to a 6-0, 6-2 win.
