Honolulu—The University of Hawai'i soccer team will return to Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium for the Rainbow Wahine Shootout from Sept. 20-23, with North Dakota State and Grand Canyon visiting the island of O'ahu.
The Rainbow Wahine (3-3-1) will not play in the first matchup of the shootout as the Bison (2-3), and the Lopes (3-7) will kick off the event on Thursday, followed by UH playing on Saturday and Sunday against each squad.
The last three matchups for UH have been tough as the Rainbow Wahine went 0-2-1. Those three matches featured Division II powerhouse UC San Diego, Nevada, and San Francisco, with the only home match being against UC San Diego.
Junior goalkeeper
Alexis Mata has been the standout stud, accounting for 23 saves over the previous three contest where opponents registered a total of 50 shots. Mata currently ranks No. 2 within the Big West in saves with 41, as well as No. 4 in save percentage at .804.
First up for the 'Bows will be NDSU for a Saturday afternoon match at 2 p.m. HT. NDSU snapped a recent three-match losing streak with a 2-1 victory over Northern Iowa on Sept. 9. It will be 11-days since the Bison last played before taking on GCU. NDSU was picked to finish No. 4 in the Summit League preseason poll and are led by a pair of seniors in Malley O'Brien and Hanna Norman. Forward Brooklyn Dew enters play as a previous Summit League Offensive Player of the Week from Sept. 10th, where she notched her first goal and assist in the win against UNI.
It'll be a quick turnaround for UH as they'll take on GCU the following day at 5 p.m. HT. The season started off slow for the Lopes going 1-7 in their first eight matches, but are entering the shootout winners of back-to-back matchups against Portland State and a familiar opponent to UH in Cal State Fullerton. Senior McKenzie Cook leads the way as the top scoring threat for GCU, accounting for four goals with 20 shots on goal. Cook enters the weekend as the reigning Western Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week and her teammate; goalkeeper Abby Burton also earned a weekly honor as the Defensive Player of the Week. Cook found the net four times and Burton swiped a total of 10 saves in the weekend sweep.
