HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team (0-2) was swept for the second night in a row at the hands of Kansas State (2-0), 25-21, 27-25, 25-19. Senior outside hitter
McKenna Granato, junior setter/hitter
Norene Iosia and senior setter
Faith Ma'afala all recorded double-doubles in a carbon-copy of Saturday night's match on Sunday afternoon at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Granato led Hawai'i with 11 kills while popping up 12 digs. She was also in on two blocks. After improving her career-high in kills to eight a night earlier,
Norene Iosia raised her career-high in kills to 10 while dishing out 16 assists in UH's modified 2-6 offense. She also added two blocks and six digs.
Faith Ma'afala led UH with 25 assists while posting 10 digs. Senior libero Tita Akiu had a match-high 14 digs.
In the first set, K-State and Hawai'i were tied six times with the last coming at 13-13. But from that point, the Wildcats slowly pulled away to take the first frame, 25-21.
In the second set, UH's block emerged, as the 'Bows notched 5.0 in the set. Hawai'i was looking to even the match at 1-1 and led by as much four points late, 24-20. But UH led their lead and the set slip away as Kansas State staved off four-straight set points and ended the set on a 7-to-1 run, to go up 2-0 with a 27-25 Set 2 win.
The third set looked much like last night's third set. UH kept things close until K-State went on a 6-to-0 run after being tied at 8-8, from which the 'Bows could not recover from. Kansas State closed out the match with a 25-19 win in the third.
The loss in three sets marks the first time UH has ever been swept in their first two home matches of the season. UH was swept twice to start the season on the road in both 2005 (Nebraska and Penn State) and 2001 (Nebraska and Wisconsin). It is the first time a team has swept UH at home since 1992 when UC Santa Barbara accomplished that feat in Klum Gym. And, the last time Hawai'i lost twice to one team at home was also to UCSB in 1993 when UH lost 0-3 and 2-3 in their final year in Klum Gym.
The Rainbow Wahine have a quick turnaround as they take on the Chanticleers of Coastal Carolina in a two-match series. The two teams will collide on Aug. 30 and 31. Both matches will start at 7:00 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center.
