Women's Volleyball Sweeps Coastal Carolina For First Win Of Season

 HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team (1-2, 0-0 Big West) bounced back to notch its first win of the season with a sweep over Coastal Carolina, 25-17, 25-21, 25-17. Senior outside hitter McKenna Granato led UH for the third-straight match with a match-high 15 kills, while middle hitters senior Sarah Liva and sophomore Skyler Williams paced the 'Bows at the net with three blocks apiece. Junior setter/outside hitter Norene Iosia notched her second double-double of the season with 17 assists and a team-high 13 digs on Thursday night at the Stan Sheriff Center.
 
Granato hit .306 for the night with 15 kills on 36 attacks and just four errors. She also added five digs and two blocks on her stat line. In addition to her double-double, Iosia added eight kills and a block for the match.  Liva also picked up six kills. Williams, who didn't serve at all last year, recorded a career-high three service aces in the win. She also contributed with five kills while hitting .500 (5-0-10). And, for the third straight match, senior libero Tita Akiu posted double digit digs with 12.
 
In the first set, UH took an early lead at 3-2 and slowly pulled away, building as big as a nine point lead late in the set as the Rainbow Wahine cruise to a 25-17 win to start the game. It was their first set win of the season. In the first frame, Granato, Liva and Iosia all led UH with three kills apiece.
 
The Chanticleers took an early 6-4 lead in Set 2. But the 'Bows battled back to tie the score at 7-7, 8-8, and 9-9 before finally gaining traction on the scoreboard. Behind the serving of Faith Ma'afala, UH went on a 3-to-0 run to give UH a 13-9 lead. Hawai'i led much of the second set, but with CC's Carla Cahill serving the Chants went on a 5-to-0 run to knot the score at 19-19. The 'Bows responded by scoring four of the next five points as UH closed out a 25-21 win in the second set.
 
Coastal Carolina poured it on to start the third set strong, taking a 10-3 lead. But, with Rika Okino and then Akiu serving runs of six points and five points each, UH was able climb back into the set and take a 14-11 lead which they did not relinquish the rest of the way as they won Set 3, 25-17.
 
Hawai'i and Coastal Carolina will square off in a rematch on Friday night at 7:00 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center.
