HONOLULU— The University of Hawai'i women's soccer team notched its first win of the 2018 season with a dramatic 1-0 overtime win over Bowling Green State to conclude the Outrigger Soccer Kickoff on Sunday night at Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
Senior midfielder
Raisa Strom-Okimoto blasted a winding right-to-left, 25-yard game-winner in the 95th minute that curled just beyond the outstretched arms of goalkeeper Kathleen Duwve. Strom-Okimoto's heroics lifted Hawaii (1-1) a fierce defensive struggle against Bowling Green (0-1-1). The game winner marks the fifth of Strom-Okimoto's career.
The Rainbow Wahine pressed the attack for much of the first half but was unable to break through on the scoreboard. The best scoring opportunity presented itself as the conclusion of the first half. Freshman forward
Claire Jo Diede sent a bending 30-yard strike toward Duwve, who just managed reach upward to tip the ball away as time expired.
The second half saw both teams produce scoring opportunities at each end of the field. Senior midfielder
Sarah Lau narrowly missed wide right on a header attempt off of a cross from sophomore midfielder
Izzy Deutsch. The Falcons, however, controlled the ball for much of the final 20-minutes of the contests, producing opportunities from short range. UH held on however behind strong defensive play from its back line. Freshman defender
Natalie Daub and sophomore
Cristina Drossos held firm with physical play, blocking several shot attempts at close range.
UH outshot BSU narrowly 14-13, while Duwve led both sides with ten saves. The Rainbow Wahine's redshirt-junior goalkeeper
Alexis Mata produced six saves of her own, three in each half. Though the game proved to be physical throughout, there were only three corners kicks taken in all – two for the Falcons.
UH will have a quick turnaround following the two-match opening weekend by welcoming in the University of Montana on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. HT. The match will be the first of two for the Rainbow Wahine Soccer Invitational as Arizona State will round out the field, with a scheduled game against UH on Friday at 7:00 p.m. HT.
