First-year special teams coordinator
Michael Ghobrial joined the University of Hawai'i football staff early in January. Ghobrial has proven to be an up-and-comer in the special teams and coaching world, coming off two very successful seasons at Tarleton State; starting his career at his alma mater, UCLA.
HawaiiAthletics.com and H-TV was able to sit down with the new Warriors special teams coordinator to gain some insight into the man behind the position.
Q: What has been the best for you so far during your time in Hawai'i?
A: The best thing about living in Hawai'i is that you truly see how special of a place this is. Aside from the gorgeous scenery wherever you are on the island, the culture and environment is really family-oriented. The vibe out here has always been positive, and that is something you can truly experience every day.
Q: Anything that people would be surprised to know about you?
A: Football is obviously one of my top passions in life, but some people would also be surprised to know that cooking is too. I have been a foodie my whole life, which I get from my dad. Whenever I'm free and I have an opportunity to cook something I've seen on the Food Network, or try something new, I definitely will throw down in the kitchen.
Q: Speaking of food, what is your absolute favorite?
A: I love trying new foods but a staple of mine is a patty melt. The absolute best place to get it is at Y'Not in Torrance, California.
Q: Do you have any superstitions or pregame habits?
A: No matter what time our game is, I always get a workout in before. A lot of times I like to get a workout at the stadium we are playing in. The feeling that you get when you have a pregame music playlist going, and the mindset buildup of going into battle with your team, gets me ready for the game.
Q: What's a consistent saying or sticking point your players would point to in your coaching?
A: One point of emphasis I try to hammer home to my players whether it be in a meeting, practice, weight room session, etc., is be the same guy everyday. That means to not pick and choose when you want to put in the necessary work it takes to achieve your goals. That all amounts to always competing, and continuously trying to raise your level of competitiveness everyday. We have a saying that we start special teams meetings, which is "day in, day out, I am that man!"
Q: Who you would you say is your coaching mentor?
A: There have been many coaches that have had a significant impact on my coaching career from the way I coach, and the way I develop relationships through this sport. But a couple guys to talk about are Jeff Ulbrich and Clark Lea. Jeff showed me the approach and passion that you can make contagious to those around you, by always challenging yourself to find different ways to motivate your players. Clark showed me what it means to be a true professional in this industry and how you treat people will impact your life and those around you for the better. There are so many other coaches that have been part of who I am today but these two stand out for two things I firmly believe in with my coaching.
Q: What is the favorite place that you've traveled in your life?
A: One of my favorite places that I've traveled to would be Payette Lake in McCall, Idaho. I Love being around the water and enjoying a summer day with good friends and family.
