FULLERTON, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i baseball team (21-15, 7-5 BWC) dropped the series finale at Cal State Fullerton (19-19, 6-3 BWC) on Sunday at Goodwin Field, losing its first Big West series of the year on the 8-0 shutout loss.
Â
Things never got on track for the Rainbow Warrior pitchers in the early going, as the Titans produced nine hits and racked up an 8-0 lead against starter
Dominic DeMiero and reliever
Logan Pouelsen in the first three innings.
Â
Finally, in the fourth inning senior
Brody Hagel-Pitt took over pitching duties for the Rainbow Warriors and cooled things down. Hagel-Pitt matched his career high with 3.0 shutout innings, allowing just one hit and one walk, while striking out a career-best four batters. The 'Bows handed off to freshman
Jeremy Yelland, who held the Titans scoreless for two more innings, with no hits and two strikeouts.
Â
Blanked on the scoreboard, the Rainbow Warriors were not without opportunities, registering 11 hits to match the Titans. However, five CSF double plays plagued Hawai'i, coming up short on four opportunities with runners in scoring position.
Â
At the plate,
Ethan Lopez and
Alex Baeza were both 2-for-3, while
Maaki Yamazaki and
Johnny Weeks went 2-for-4.
Â
The Rainbow Warriors wrap the road swing and return to Les Murakami Stadium for a two-week, six-game homestand. Next week, the CSUN Matadors (17-22, 5-7 BWC) head to Honolulu for the 'Bows' fifth Big West series. The Matadors are on a five-game losing streak after being swept by UC Irvine and face Fresno State on Tuesday before heading to the airport.
